3rd Grade

Here is one of my more advanced 3rd grade students performing a handstand in our gymnastics, rolling, and tumbling unit.

Hungry Hungry Hippos

This game is called Hungry Hungry Hippos. The students are in teams and they try to collect the balls for their team. The game consists of 3 rounds each round the students have a different task. The students record the different tasks on their paper. I even try to incorporate math skills and counting. The students really love recreating the game they have played at home. Here is an example of the task sheets.

King Pin

This game is called King Pin. The students are paired together and they try to knock over the pin that is between them. Each keeps score trying to earn the most points.

This game is called Scooter Pinball. The goalies throw the ball to their teammates and the teammates try to score by knocking down the pins. When the student has the ball they are not allowed to move. The students without the ball are the only ones allowed to move.

This is my 3rd graders playing a modified version of tee ball. When a player hits off the tee, he or she runs to a cone (base) and the outfield retrieves the ball. When the ball is placed back on the tee, they count how many times the player got around the bases. In this way, we can work on sharpening their hand-eye coordination while learning the basics of  baseball.

This game is called borderball. This game works on throwing and catching. Here you see the students  throwing the gator skin balls at the over-sized playground ball. The object is to try and push the over-sized ball over the other teams border. This is a great activity to work on their throwing skills.

This game is called Monster Mash. I play this game during Halloween. I divide the class into half. I tell them a story about how their are haunted houses in the gym. They are the benches in the gym. I say they are haunted because of the monster in them (cones) The students must throw yarn balls either underhand or overhand at the monster to try and knock them out of the house. If all of the monsters are knocked they win.

This game is called Human Fuss Ball. I divide the students and put them in positions like a fuss ball table. The are connected with a jump rope. They must hold the rope at all times. They are only allowed to move sideways not up and back. Its great because all students work together.

The game you see here is called dribble jump. The students are partnered up and one partner dribbles while the other partner jumps rope. After 30 seconds they stop and compare dribbles to jumps then switch roles.

This station is over under and around. I have to thank Carly from Carly's PE for giving me the idea if the station. The students really loved moving through the station.

We are in a fitness unit. I set up stations with high and low intensity for the students to move through. At times during the lesson I will stop the class and we will all do a pulse check to see if we reached our heartbeat goal.

As a finale to our bowling unit I converted the gym into a bowling alley. We shut off the lights and the students did cosmic bowling. They really enjoyed themselves. It is a little hard to see but I had laser lights and a disco ball as they students bowled.
